History and Purpose of Thai Massage

Here at Thai Fusion Spa, our therapists practise Thai massage.

Thai massage is different to other massage therapies, as it is ‘dry’ and does not involve the use of oils or lotions.

Rather, our therapists apply pressure to different parts of the body to help restore the flow of energy and alleviate the customer of any physical or emotional discomfort.

In this article, we will look at the history and purpose of Thai massage, and why it is so beneficial to your overall wellbeing.

History

According to legend, Thai massage was created roughly 2,500 years ago by Jivaka Komarabhacca (sometimes referred to as Shivago Kompara), who has also been credited as the founder of traditional Thai medicine.

Born in northern India, Komarabhacca later converted to Buddhism and was said to be a close friend and personal physician of the Buddha.

Though the recoded history of Thai massage is somewhat patchy, due to the destruction of important writings during the Burmese-Siamese War, the modality is believed to be influenced by a variety of traditional medicine systems from across Asia.

For instance, Thai massage is believed to blend elements of traditional Chinese medicine with yoga and Ayurvedic (medicine) practices from India, as well as several indigenous Thai healing arts like bone setting.

Purpose

Proponents of Thai massage believe that Sen (energy) lines run throughout our body and power all aspects of our health.

As such, any blockages or imbalances in these Sen lines can cause pain and poor emotional wellbeing.

Thai therapists subsequently compress and stretch different parts of the client’s body to restore the flow of energy and improve their health.

Benefits

By restoring the body’s balance of energy, Thai massage is said to have the following benefits:

  • The incorporation of yoga-like stretches can relax and lengthen tight muscles, thereby alleviating pain and improving flexibility

  • The combination of stretching techniques and gentle pressure can relax the whole body, thereby reducing stress levels and improving sleep quality

  • The use of gentle stretches can also promote blood and lymph circulation, thereby filling the body’s tissues with oxygen and promoting good heart health
